Fence Stain & Paint Coverage Calculator
Estimate how many gallons of stain or paint you need to cover a wood fence.
Fence coverage is really just a surface-area problem: multiply the linear footage by the height to get the area of one face, then multiply again by however many faces and coats you're applying. That total area gets divided by the product's coverage rate, which depends heavily on the wood — rough-sawn cedar or pine soaks up far more stain per square foot than a smooth, previously-sealed surface, so it's worth checking the coverage rate on the can rather than assuming a standard number.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to stain both sides of a fence?
It depends on ownership and exposure — many people only stain the side facing their own yard, but coating both sides protects the wood better and extends its lifespan, especially on the side that takes more direct sun and rain.
How much more stain does rough wood need compared to smooth wood?
Rough-sawn or previously unfinished wood can absorb 30-50% more stain than smooth, dressed lumber, which is why coverage rates as low as 150 sq ft per gallon are common on new rough cedar fencing.
