Concrete Slab Calculator
Find out how many cubic yards of concrete and how many bags you need for a slab, patio, or driveway.
Bag counts are based on standard 60 lb and 80 lb pre-mix bags. Always round up when ordering.
A concrete slab calculator turns three simple measurements — length, width, and thickness — into the cubic yardage of concrete you need to order, plus how many pre-mixed bags that translates to if you're hand-mixing instead of ordering ready-mix. Getting this number right matters: order too little and you'll have a visible cold joint where a second truck picks up; order too much and you're paying a redi-mix company for wasted yardage that still needs to be hauled away.
The math is straightforward volume: length × width gives you the surface area, and multiplying by thickness (converted to feet) gives cubic feet, which divides by 27 to become cubic yards — the unit ready-mix companies sell in. This calculator also adds a waste factor, typically 5-10%, because real job sites are never perfectly flat and some concrete always ends up in the wheelbarrow, on the ground, or in the mixer drum.
Frequently Asked Questions
How thick should a concrete slab be?
Most walkways and patios use 4 inches of concrete. Driveways that will carry vehicles should be 5-6 inches, and areas expecting heavy trucks need 6-8 inches with reinforcement.
How many bags of concrete do I need per cubic yard?
One cubic yard needs roughly 60 bags of 60 lb pre-mix or 45 bags of 80 lb pre-mix, since a 60 lb bag yields about 0.45 cubic feet and an 80 lb bag yields about 0.6 cubic feet.
